First Friday and last Post

Tonight is First Friday and this has been the show that i was very much involved in and hands on with just about everything. We have Toyota Scions sponsoring our show so there are free cd's and magazines about the cars to be passed out tonight at the show. Unfortunately the artist will not be at the show tonight but also we are all wondering how this First Friday turn out will be because of the heat and the holiday weekend. But if your looking for something to do before you go to dinner or the bar for the night come down and check it out. As for what i have gotten out of my internship, I have been learning more and more everytime im in the gallery about what it take to own and run a gallery. I am still wondering how they stay afloat and i dont find it an appropriate question to ask, but with sponsors for shows it seems more doable. After this next week i will be going on studio tours of local artist which im very excited about and will start learning about the process of picking shows.

This show has been a nightmare, the flyers still have not been delivered, two pieces still were not delivered but we were promised they will be here before the show tonight, and hanging unframed canvas is not an easy project. But by the end of the night it started to look like a show. Hopefully everything will come together before the doors open.

Tonight at the gallery I filled in holes, sanded walls, cleaned up the windows, and put the lettering up for the new show. After cleaning up the gallery i started laying out the pieces to realize how the other gallery owner in LA that put the show together really did not put much thought into how our show would flow. There are too many pieces for our small gallery the frame on one was done poorly. And dont get me started on just sending unframed canvas for a show!!!! WHAT A MESS!!! oh and on top of this the flyers got mess up and we cant get them in until monday. OY!!!!

The Ups and Downs of working in a gallery

After unpacking the new i started to realize that owning a gallery does not always have its perks. After unwrapping one of the pieces we realized it was damaged which is always a risk of happening when working with out of state artist who have to ship the show to you. The other pieces were a bit of a surprise for us, i guess when your being shipped a show it is "like a box of chocolates, ya never know whatca gonna get". There was a tube of prints on canvas which sucks to hang and handle because they show grease and finger prints. And than what i thought to be the coolest piece in the show they only sent one of, what a let down. I just thought this was a very odd grouping for a show, since the last show flowed so well.

Well today i went to the gallery to take down the previous show and prep for the new show for First Friday. Taking down a show well......is not too much fun. BUBBLE WRAP every where, it was very hard to step with out hearing a POP. Scared the crap out of me, no matter how many time you step on them it is still startling. Putting away a show is definitely not as exciting as unpacking one. Why is it that once you unpack something and go to repack it in the same box it never fits the same way???

Promting Shows

As I'm learning more and more on how a gallery works, I'm realizing that every gallery does things their own ways. In ways of promoting, it seems like the artist does a lot on their facebook,twitter, myspace, and website, as well as the gallery. We promote in the New Times and have flyers that go around. Some galleries promote just with flowers and through thier websites with out putting out ads in local papers and magazines. But alot of the promotion is by the good old word of mouth from friends but The New Times and Java are two great places to check out whats going on downtown.

About Richard Edson:

Actor/musician Richard Edson, easily recognized for his unforgettable roles in Jim Jarmusch's, 'Stranger Than Paradise," Spike Lee's, "Do the Right Thing!" and character roles as the joyriding valet Smyznyk in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," and Monix in "Starsky and Hutch," proves his versatility as a photographer. June 19 – 29, 2008 Richard Edson was the original drummer with the band Sonic Youth and played trumpet and percussion with New York based afro-dance band Konk. He has continued to pursue music in Los Angeles with Jake LaBotz, Tito and Tarantula, Mr. Razz, Top Kat, and Gio and the Constellations, and currently his own band Oil Can.

For years Edson took black and white, street and snapshot-style photographs in the tradition of Robert Frank, Gary Winnogrand and Henri Cartier-Bresson but then wanted to experiment with color. Edson claims that the genesis of his current work was prosaic; while visiting his brother's suburban family home in Massachusetts he became inspired by the little toys and figures lying around the house. "I've always been attracted to cartoons and comics as an "alternative," suggestive and evocative reality. Their simplicity, immediacy, size and humor speak of a level of life that touches and refers to childhood, dreams, myths and our secret, private emotional and psychological lives." Edson comments.

As an actor Edson has appeared in more than 72 films including some of the most distinguished movies of all time: Oliver Stone's "Platoon," and recently in Wim Wender's "Land of Plenty," the Polish Brothers "The Astronaut Farmer," "Starsky and Hutch" and the lead in three films by the young French filmmaker, Raphael Nadjari, "The Shade," "I Am Josh Polanski's Brother," and "Apt. 5C." Edson's resume includes five solo shows, numerous group exhibitions and features in "Juxtapoz," "The Propagandist," "WaxPoetics," and "Puta," magazines.

About Morgan Slade:

Morgan Slade received his BFA in photography in 2002 from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. He has shot for several magazines including Swindle, Anthem, Juxtapoz, OUT Magazine, Western Interiors & Design and many others. Morgan has exhibited both photography and mixed media work in several galleries, including a solo show at Copro Nason Gallery in Bergamot Station in 2006. He is also known as the principal songwriter/guitarist in the band Miss Derringer, a project he collaborates on with his wife, artist Liz McGrath. Miss Derringer have toured with Bad Religion, Blondie, John Doe and others, and their third album is due in early 2009.

Roosevelt Row Galleries

I've noticed there have been some comments asking how the galleries in crease foot traffic and make a profit. All the Galleries on Roosevelt Row work closely with ARTLINK ( the non profit that organizes first and third fridays) to work on getting mor evenders and people on the streets for first Friday. Although, First Fridays don't really seem to be a problem for me. There is a great turn out and is the day galleries sell the most. The problem is every other day there is very few or somethime no one walking the streets going into galleries. I think having another First Friday event during the month would increase profit for everyone involved.

There are Third Fridays but those are just the galleries that are open and seem to be pretty uneventful. I honestly think the only day we sold pieces was on First Friday. Well, just a thought after a day of doing nothing.

This past Thursday I had more gallery hours to do, which were again very uneventful. Not one person came into the Gallery. I wonder if the foot traffic was any better when the economy was not the way it is now. Even though i just sat in the gallery for five hours doing nothing im still enojoying this internship. This coming week ill be taking down and packing up the old showing, cleaning up the gallery and getting ready for first friday. This next show is all photography from what i hear so if your intersted you should stop by :)

Gallery Hours

So this past Thursday was the first time I was able to do gallery hours. Sitting in the gallery for five to six hours doing NOTHING. I understand the importance to have gallery hours and having someone in the gallery in case someone walks in to buy a piece. Definitely not an exciting part of being part of a gallery. There where a few people that wondered in to check out the show and I was able to talk and share everything about the artist but that was about all the excitement i saw this Thursday. I am already looking for to the next First Friday but there is Third friday next week, there is no vendors just the galleries are open feel free to stop by and see the show before the 28th.

First Friday

This past Friday was my first, First Friday working at the gallery and it ended up being completely different than what i thought it would. I spent Wednesday and Thursday night prepping for the new show Friday which included filling wholes and sanding the walls to scrubbing the floor, packing up the old show and unpacking the new one. All the prep work that goes into a show is not that glamorous but i did enjoy the actual placing of the new show. Trying to figure out a good flow and which pieces should go next to each other really made you look at every little thing in the piece of the work more so than you would just walking into gallery.

I was not expecting to be able to spend all night talking to the artist or to sell any work. I never really thought that the galleries on Roosevelt would sell much on First Friday because of higher prices and the younger crowd that is attracted to the art walk. To my surprise we almost sold out the front room of the gallery. I did not stay till the gallery closed the doors I left around 11 and it was still crazy out. Over all it was an awesome experience and i enjoyed all of it especially getting to meet all the other gallery owners as well as other artist that are shown in the gallery. I look forward to Third Friday this month.
